Captain King's Seafood City, Memphis, TN

Captain King's

MAP

Captain King's is a seafood buffet on Covington Pike just south of Stage Road. I've seen it several times but never been there until recently when a friend recommended it.

Let me say, I was highly impressed. I went for lunch and lunch buffet price is only about $13 and the dinner buffet is only about $17. Everything I got was good and there were plenty of choices. I think this may be the best deal in town as far as buffets are concerned.

There wasn't as much seafood as I expected but there were plenty of options including Mexican, Asian, salad, and various other choices.

I will definitely be back!

The Sizzler Steakhouse, Oxford, MS

The Sizzler

MAP

The Sizzler is a casual steak house in Oxford on Highway  6 about five or six miles east of Highway 7 on the south side of the highway. I went there tonight for the first time.

The food was pretty good, especially for the price. I got a small filet with shrimp with sides of a loaded potato and salad (you fix your salad) and all of it was good. The filet was good but not great but I was definitely impressed and will be back!

My friend got grilled chicken and fish and he said it was good and we split a sausage and cheese plate appetizer. My total was about $65 but for everything I got that was a good price.

I also heard from another friend that their cheeseburgers are really good.

I am on a diet so I didn't eat much of it and have enough left over for at least one more meal if not two.

The service was also very good.

Walk-Ons, Southaven, MS

Walk-Ons

MAP

Walk-Ons is a new sport bar (listed as a sports bistreaux) in Southaven on Snowden Lane a few blocks south of Goodman Road behind the Kroger. I think it's been open five or six weeks.

I went there a few weeks ago for the first time right after they first opened but didn't have a particularly good time, which I will explain. I went back about two weeks later and my experience was much better.

The first time I ordered boneless buffalo wings and alligator bites and the second time I ordered I ordered a jalapeño burger and alligator bites.

Here's what happened the first time: I ordered boneless buffalo wings and apparently the waitress interpreted that as boneless wings with no sauce. That said however, when I asked if they item was correct after she brought she apologized and asked if I wanted her to bring me the buffalo sauce or have the item remade. Mistakes happen. That's no big deal I just wanted to mention it in order to be honest in my review. The chicken was tender and crispy and the buffalo sauce was pretty good. I think it would have been better if they had fixed it correctly however, as I said they were good.

Also worth noting, the first time it was extremely loud inside. Not because of music but people were being extremely loud and I mean like ridiculously loud. Not "if it's too loud you're too old" but just crazy loud. People were screaming for no apparent reason. It was literally hard to concentrate and that may also be part of the reason the waitress misunderstood my order. I have also heard a couple of other people say similar things about the noise level.

The alligator bites were really good as well both times and the jalapeño burger was really good and the second visit was much better.

I was originally unsure if I would go back but the shop where I get my hair cut is directly next door to the restaurant and last week after getting my hair cut I decided to give a try during lunch time and the visit was much more pleasant.

The prices were fairly reasonable for a newer restaurant in that part of town. I think my total both times was around $40 including a drink and tax.

I definitely liked the food and would recommend them with the caveat that as far as noise levels are concerned, if that bothers you, you will probably have a better time if you go during the day instead of at night.

Subarashi, Memphis, TN

Subarashi

MAP

Subarashi is listed as a bubble tea shop but it's more of a sushi restaurant, at least that's how it seemed to me. I first saw it last year when I went to a nearby restaurant but it wasn't open yet. I went there to eat for the first time a few weeks ago and I've already been back a couple of times.

Both times I ordered a spicy tuna and spicy salmon roll and the second time I ordered a side of spring rolls. I also tried one piece of gyoza that my friend ordered and it was really good too.

The prices are pretty good and the service was good. The first time my total was only about $17 including a drink and tax. The second time it was about $5 more because I got the spring rolls.

I highly recommend them and I will be back!

Hard Times Deli, Memphis, TN

Hard Times Deli

MAP

Hard Times Deli is a relatively new deli on Marshall Avenue in midtown about a block or so northeast of Union Avenue. I believe they have been open just a few months. I went there a couple of weeks ago for the first time.

The food was great. The prices were a little high but not anything extravagant. I ordered a Spicy Italian sandwich. They don't have much in the way of drinks. Mostly Coke in bottles, a few soft drinks I had never heard of, and it seems like they had beer but I can't swear to that.

They are only open Tuesday though Saturday 10 AM - 4 PM and apparently they stay pretty busy up until around 2:00 or 2:30 and they only accept credit cards (no cash). It took a few minutes to get my order but it was because they were so busy. There were several employees behind the counter and they were all hustling. It's also worth noting there's not much parking along Marshall Avenue. I got lucky because I went at about 1:30.

I will definitely go back and highly recommend giving they a try!

Delta Steakhouse, Senatobia, MS

Delta Steakhouse

MAP

Delta Steakhouse is a steak house (duh!) in Senatobia on North Front Street east of Highway 51 north of Front Street.

I went there a few weeks ago and was impressed. I had seen mixed reviews but my food was good.  I'm not from north Mississippi but most of the folks I know here recommend it. I ordered a sausage and cheese plate and a filet. The prices were about what you expect. My total was somewhere around $60 including a drink and tax before tip.

The service was really good and I will definitely be back. On an additional plus side, I saw several friends that I hadn't talked to in a year or more.

Babalu, Memphis, TN

Babalu

MAP

Babalu is listed as "southern cuisine with Latin flair." I went there a couple of weeks ago with some friends I hadn't seen in a while on their suggestion. It's on Poplar Avenue just east of Massey Road on the north side.

I got a burger and fries and thought it was really good. They are little pricey but the food is good. I definitely liked it and would recommend it.

Buon Cibo, Hernando, MS

Buon Cibo

MAP

Buon Cibo is a deli in Hernando, MS on McInvale Road in a shopping center just a little north of Principle Toyota. I've been there before but it's been several years ago. I went there last week for lunch while in the area.

I got a club sandwich with a side of pasta salad. Their food is really good, and I especially liked the pasta. They aren't cheap but the prices are reasonable for what you get.

Dorothy's Place

MAP

Dorothy's Place is a small diner in the "middle of nowhere" on H Williams Road a few miles south of Highway 72 or a few miles north of Holly Springs. I don't remember where I was going but I passed it once and then later I saw some posts about it. The food is great and the service is fantastic. They have two small tables inside but mostly do to go orders.

I've been there twice now. The first time I got catfish and the second I got a cheeseburger. The prices are pretty reasonable for what you get and I will definite go back!

Stone Pony, Clarksdale, MS

Stone Pony

MAP

Stone Pony is a pizza restaurant in downtown Clarksdale on Delta Avenue just south of West Second Street. I went there a couple of weeks ago based on a suggestion I saw on the internet.

The food was decent but nothing spectacular. I ordered one of the daily specials, the catfish. As I said, it was decent. The salad was pretty good. I would go back and try something different but overall it was mediocre.

 Other recent trips:

Kennel Club Steakhouse, Batesville, MS - steak and potato

El Maguey

MAP

El Maguey is a relatively new Mexican restaurant in Horn Lake. I think it's been there 2 or 3 years in the building that used to be Sekisui on Goodman Road just east Highway 51. I went there the first time a few nights ago and let me tell you, it was great!

I love Mexican food and I go to many Mexican restaurants. I ordered the Maguey quesadilla which had chicken, steak, and shrimp and it was fantastic! The queso was good too.

The price was reasonable for what I got. The total was around $21 including a drink and tax the the quesadilla was huge. I couldn't eat all of it.

I highly recommend them and I will definitely be back soon!

Another Broken Egg, Memphis, TN

Another Broken Egg

MAP

Another Broken Egg is a chain and I usually don't review chains but they are fairly new to our area. There are two locations here and I've been to the on Highland twice. It's located on Highland Street at Walnut Grove road the shopping center there.

Their food is good but they are little pricey. Not bad, just not cheap. Something to watch out for, some of their drinks are pretty expensive. A glass of regular tea is close to $5.

The first time there I got breakfast food (I'm only occasionally in the mood for breakfast food) but I was told I could order anything on the menu any time. The second time I got a club sandwich.

Everything was good and I will definitely go back I'll probably just water to drink.

American Joy Restaurant, Memphis, TN

No website that I could find but they do deliver through some of the food delivery services.

MAP

American Joy is a small take out only burger and wings shop on Highland Street just south of Park Avenue just before the curve where Highland turns in Prescott.

I stopped by there a few days on the way home from Memphis and got a burger. They seem to be pretty popular. Several people came in to get order while I was there.

The prices were fairly reasonable and the guy was really nice. It seems that the guy that runs the register also cooks so it took a few minutes to get food but it wasn't all that long.

The burger was pretty good. It wasn't as good as I was expecting but I would definitely go there again.

They don't open until 2 PM apparently but they stay open late, until about 3 AM according to google.
