Mixon's Kitchen, Cockrum/Hernando, MS

Mixon's Kitchen is a small cafe on Highway 305 at Holly Springs Road in Hernando a little south of I-269. I went there tonight for dinner.

I ordered a country fried steak, mashed potatoes, corn, and an appetizer of something called Cowboy Bites which were jalapeƱo, cheese, and corn bites that had been deep fried served with ranch sauce for dipping. The food was pretty good and overall the service was pretty good.

There was a table with several people at it and they were giving the waitress a hard time and being loud and obnoxious. They were hollering for her to hurry up with their drinks while she was clearly trying to ring up another customer. It seemed like they may have been kidding with the waitress but I'm not sure. Regardless, they were still being loud and cursing a lot.

The waitress apologized to me for taking too long to get my order and said the people at the other table were the owners. It was pretty annoying and I'll have to decide to whether I want to go back or not. It was certainly not very good advertising for the place if they were the owners. Let me also specify that I am in no way a prude. I am not the least bit offended by cursing or off color jokes but when I'm trying to eat and "can't hear myself think" over a group of loud, obnoxious people, it's not a good experience, and certainly, the cursing and off color humor could have been offensive to some people.

As I said, the food was pretty good and the prices were reasonable. All together including a drink and tax, my total was just under $20 but considering I ordered an appetizer that wasn't too bad.

Moma's Barbecue, Bartlett, TN

Moma's

MAP

Moma's is a small barbecue restaurant in Bartlett on Stage Road a couple of blocks west of Alturia Road on the south side. I went there this past Thursday for early dinner with a friend of mine.

I hadn't eaten all day and was really hungry and I ordered the daily special which was a bacon cheeseburger with fries, and I also ordered a small barbecue sandwich so I could try the barbecue.

Honestly, I wasn't all that impressed. Both the burger and the barbecue were mediocre and the bacon on the burger was very chewy. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't particularly good. My friend ordered ribs and said they were pretty good. With all the really good barbecue places in the area, there are better choices.

The prices weren't really too bad. My total including a drink before tip was just over $18 and for what I got that's not bad. I won't say I won't go back but it's not on the top of my list of places to try again. Apparently it's been there a long time and they had a lot of (mostly older) customers come in while my friend and I were there.

The service was good. Everyone was friendly and the food came out pretty quickly.

If you're in the area give them a try and let me know what you think. I took a picture of my food but it wasn't on my camera when I got home. This is a picture of the ribs.

Well's Kitchen, Brighton, TN

Wells Kitchen

MAP

Wells Kitchen is a small cafe in Brighton on Main Street just past the police department. I went there this past Friday afternoon for lunch. I tried to go there a few days prior but they close from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM so I went somewhere else that day.

I ordered country fried steak, macaroni and cheese, black-eyed peas, and a side salad. The side items including the blue cheese for the salad were very good but the steak was average. Not bad, just not great. My friend that rode with me ordered a "taco salad baked potato" and he said it was very good. I will definitely go back and try it again. No complaints! They have Diet Doctor Pepper which is a big plus for me.

There were several things on the menu that sounded good and they had a good selection of desserts but I rarely order dessert.

My total including a drink and tax was about $16.50 before tip so the prices are reasonable.

Outlaw Barbecue, Atoka, TN

Outlaw BBQ

MAP

Outlaw Barbecue is a small relatively new barbecue restaurant in Atoka right on Highway 51 (Tennessee Highway 3) a little north of the post office next to Sonic. I actually went to another place in Brighton but they were closed. The parking lot was a little tricky because it doesn't have an entrance directly off the highway. If I remember correctly you can turn into the oil change place or you have to to the light just north and turn and come in behind it.

I had heard about Outlaw and decided to try it since the other place was closed. The service was great and the food was fantastic. I wasn't sure what to get and the waitress recommended the barbecue egg rolls and they were excellent. I got the mixed (mild/hot) sauce and it was more than enough for a meal. The total was around $12 including a drink and tax.

Next time I'll try a barbecue sandwich but the barbecue in the egg rolls was great.

SideStreet Burgers, Olive Branch, MS

SideStreet Bugers

SideStreet is a small burger joint on Highway 178 (Old 78) in Olive Branch just north of Goodman Road. I had been there before 2 or 3 years ago but I wasn't all that impressed. I don't remember what I got. I met a friend there this past Saturday night on his suggestion and this time it was really good.

This time I ordered something called the "That's my bacon jam" and it was really good. It was a burger with pimento cheese and house made bacon jam. I'm not really sure what that is but it was really good. I got a side order of garlic wedges which were also very good.

With a drink and tax the total was a little over $13 and well worth the price. They don't have indoor seating right now but Saturday night was nice and my friend and out sat outside on the patio. They also said we could go next door to the Ale House and sit there if we wanted to.

Like I said, this time it was really good and I will definitely be back.

Little Italy is a small casual Italian cafe with several locations. I went to the one in Bartlett last night which is on U.S. Highway 70 just east Appling Road, right next to Stewart Brother's Hardware

I ordered chicken Parmesan and it was fantastic! It was some of the best I've had. It came with a side salad which was very good also.

My friend got a meat lovers pizza which was only $10 but he added a couple of extra ingredients to it. He said it was very good also.

My meal was about $17 including a drink and tax and it was plenty of food so for the price I was very happy. The staff was very friendly and the owner came out and spoke to us before we left and gave us some coupons.

I definitely will be back soon.

Sweet Pea's Southern Cookin, Bartlett, TN

Sweet Pea's

MAP

Sweet Pea's is home cooking style restaurant in the Bartlett Towne Square right near the corner of Sycamore View Road and Stage Road near the Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop. I went there last week on suggestion of a friend was really enjoyed.

I ordered fried catfish with a side salad and macaroni and cheese and was really impressed. There were a couple of other things on the menu that sounded good so I hope to get back there soon to try them. My friend ordered baked catfish and said it was really good as well.

The prices were pretty good. Including a drink and tax the total was a little under $20 before tip.
