The Brunswick Kitchen, Arlington, TN

The Brunswick Kitchen

MAP

The Brunswick Kitchen is a small diner in Arlington on Brunswick Road north of Highway 70 just north Old Brownsville Road and the railroad tracks. I went there today on the suggestion of a friend and it was fantastic!

I ordered chicken fried chicken with black eyed peas and macaroni and cheese and my friend ordered spaghetti. He said his was very good and mine definitely was some of the best I've had. Specifically the gravy was great but everything tasted good. I also had a salad and the blue cheese dressing was excellent!

Prices are very reasonable. The total bill was only about $22.00 about $11.00 each including tax. I will definitely be going back.

El Gallito, Olive Branch, MS

El Gallito

MAP

El Gallito is a small Mexican restaurant I found randomly while on the way to a different Mexican restaurant. I stopped there for dinner tonight after grabbing two tacos at another place. It's at the corner of Highway 305 and East Sandidge Road right next to a Valero gas station.

I ordered the alambres which is very similar to fajitas and it was great. Since I had already had two tacos I wasn't able to eat everything but it was plenty of food and the total before tip was only around $14. I'm going to go back soon when I'm hungrier and try something else but like I said, what I got was great. Like many places it was served with a basket of chips and four different kinds of salsa all of which was really good but most of it was really spicy (but I've love spicy).

Tienda y Taqueria El Tacontentoo, Olive Branch, MS

Tienda y Taqueria

MAP

Tiena y Taqueria is a small Mexican restaurant in Olive Branch on Highway 178 north of Magnolia Drive, close to the Pop's Express gas station and the Olive Branch high school. I went there tonight on suggestion of a coworker who told me that had great tacos, and boy was he right. I think I'm going to say these were the best tacos I've ever had!

If you order corn tortillas the tacos come with lettuce, sour cream, and tomatoes and if you order flour tortillas they come with cilantro and onion (or I may have that backwards). I ordered one of each and they were both fantastic. Honestly, I forgot to look at the menu for other things because I went there specifically to try the tacos.

The prices were pretty reasonable. For two tacos and a bottled drink the total was $8.12 but the two tacos were plenty of food for a meal and the service was great.

I will definitely be back! Just for reference, only one guy there spoke any English.

Catfish Cabin, Jackson, TN

Catish Cabin Jackson

MAP

Catfish Cabin is a franchised regional chain. At one time I believe there were 30 or more locations but now I think there are only a few. I normally don't review chain businesses but they are independently owned and operated. I was in Jackson this past Tuesday night on business and went there with a friend who had driven me there (it's a long story but I was in a wreck a few days ago and had to go to Jackson to borrow a car).

The location in Jackson is on South Highland Avenue which is apparently the same as Highway 45, a few miles south of the 45/70 interchange.

The food was great. I ordered a Catfish platter with fish, shrimp, and stuffed crab. We also ordered appetizers for the table, an order of fried green tomatoes and two orders of pepper jack cheese bites which were particularly good.

The total before tip was just under $81 but considering that was three meals, three appetizers, and three drinks, including an up-charge for an extra side salad that's really not bad for everything we got. All three of us had food to take home.

I went there a few years ago while in the area and back then they still had all you can eat and for just that with no appetizers or extras for three people it was over $100. Yes, all you can eat was something like $28 per person back in the late 90s or early 2000s so their prices have really come down a lot since then.

I definitely recommend it and I will be back when I'm in the area.

No Way Jose Mexican Restaurant, Greenwood, MS

No Way Jose

MAP

No Way Jose is a Mexican restaurant in Greenwood on Park Avenue a few blocks east of the Park Avenue/Highway 82 intersection in downtown. I was in Greenwood this past Friday to visit a cousin but he wasn't home so and I stopped by this place to eat lunch before heading home. I wasn't very hungry because I had already eaten lunch at another place (see my previous post about Rest Haven) but I had been wanting to try this place since I had seen it a few months ago.

I ordered just a chicken quesadilla and it was very good. They never brought any chips and salsa but since I wasn't very hungry I never asked about it. I want to go back and try it again for a full meal next time I'm in the area.

The prices seemed reasonable and my meal was just under $10 for the quesadilla and a drink. I'll definitely be back. Just FYI, they are posted with a no guns sign if that matters to you.

After I left I was sitting at a red light and was hit by an 18 wheeler. I do not recommend that.

Rest Haven, Clarksdale, MS

Rest Haven

MAP

Rest Haven is a small family owned diner in Clarksdale on State Street just east of New Africa Road. I've been there a couple of times but had not been recently. I was in the area this past Friday and stopped by for an early lunch.

I ordered the daily special which was fried catfish with three side items and for those I got macaroni and cheese, Lima beans, and fried potatoes. Everything was fantastic as it has been every time I've been there.

The prices are great. My total was around $11 including a drink and tax. The family that owns it is Greek and I've heard from a number of people their Greek food is fantastic but I haven't tried any of that yet. I have a couple of things I want to try next time.

I highly recommend this place! While I was there I stopped by the "crossroads" which is one of the rumored locations where Robert Johnson the blues man made his deal with the Devil. The place pictured near there, Abe's Barbecue is supposed to be really good also but I haven't had a chance to eat there yet.

Two Crazy Fellas, Olive Branch, MS

Two Crazy Fellas

Facebook Page

MAP

Two Crazy Fellas is a new Cajun restaurant in Olive Branch east of Davidson Road, near Corky's. They don't have a sign up yet but they are right next to Jersey Mike's Subs. I went there today for lunch.

They aren't cheap but most of the items on the menu are seafood so I didn't expect it to be cheap. Today I got the "choose two" with catfish and shrimp and an appetizer of shrimp etouffee and all of it was very good. There was one piece of fish and about eight pieces of shrimp along with fries, slaw, cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, and hush puppies. Most everything was a little spicy, but it's Cajun so I figured it would be.

The hush puppies and slaw both seemed a little "peppery" but I thought they were both very good. With a drink and tax before tip my total was almost $27 but like I said, it's not bad for what I got. Someone I know suggested I should try the shrimp po boy next time so that's probably what I'll get when I go back.

I definitely recommend it and I'll be back.

Shell Gas Station, Southaven, MS

Shell

MAP

There's nothing particularly remarkable about the Shell on Stateline Road west of Highway 51 in Southaven and I normally don't review chain stores, but they have a food counter and someone suggested that I try the stuffed hash browns which are supposedly really good. Unfortunately, the morning I went in there about a week or so ago they hadn't cooked any yet so I got the regular hash browns which were actually really good.

They weren't very expensive, about $2 I think. I will eventually get back in there to try the stuffed ones which have gravy and sausage inside the hash browns.
