Old Town Hall and Cafe, Covington, TN

Old Town Hall & Cafe

MAP

Old Town is a small cafe in downtown Covington in the north corner at East Court Square and East Liberty Avenue. I went there yesterday for lunch just to try it out. They are only open during lunch on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It has lots of small town charm!

I ordered a club sandwich and fries. The food was great (and the fries were really good) and the service was fantastic and the prices are pretty good. With a drink and tax, my total was only about $17.

It's attached to a small gift shop. I looked around for a minute but there wasn't anything that happened to appeal to me personally but it had quite a few items.

I will definitely go back when I'm in the area.

One other trip:

High Point Pizza, Memphis, TN - Cuban sandwich

Hometown Pizza, Water Valley, MS

Hometown Pizza

MAP

Hometown is a pizza cafe in downtown Water Valley on Main Street a little north of Highway 315. I was in Oxford a few days ago for a doctor's appointment and I drove over to Water Valley for lunch. I found this place randomly because the place I was going to go wasn't open yet.

They have a buffet but I had eaten a late breakfast and I wasn't all that hungry. I ordered a small supreme and a drink. Their small pizzas are all the same price no matter which toppings you get apparently. The total was only $11.21 including a drink and tax so they very reasonably priced. The owner was there and I met him and he offered me a free dessert which I got off of the buffet. I got banana pudding which was great but there were a couple of other choices also.

I will be back. I have to go back to Oxford next week and I'll probably go back and try the buffet.

Other trips that week:

Pop's, Millington, TN - club sandwich

Grey's Fine Cheese, Memphis, TN

Grey's Cheese

MAP

Grey's is a cheese shop and cafe on Mendenhall Road at Spottswood Avenue just across the street from Gus' Chicken, and just south of the tracks at Poplar Avenue. I went there a couple of weeks ago after having lunch in the area and got some cheese. I didn't know they had a cafe so I went back a few days later for lunch and it was really good.

The first time I went in there I noticed on the menu the "Straight out of Comte" which is Cornichon relish, local ham from Canale's, Comte cheese, and Poupon Duke's mustard on a baguette roll and I wanted to try that. I'm glad I did because it was fantastic!

I also bought some more blue cheese which was great also. Their prices aren't cheap but they are reasonable for what you get. The sandwich was $16 and it came with a bag of chips. I don't know how much the total was because a friend of mine happened to pay that day although I got water to drink.

The blue cheese I got I paid for separately and it was about $20 for a large chunk. The chunk showed in this post is the piece I bought the previous week and it was $10. The cheese was fantastic.

I highly recommend it and I will definitely be back. It's noteworthy to mention they are in a small shopping center with very little parking. I always have trouble finding a space when I go there during lunchtime.

Other trips that week:

Cinco de Mayo, Olive Branch, MS - Grilled chicken breast over with rice and beans

The Grillehouse, Southaven, MS

The Grillehouse

MAP

The Grillehouse is a steakhouse in Southaven on Getwell Road just south of Nail Road. A group from work went there last week for a shift party.

The food was okay but honestly none of us were really impressed. There were seven of us, five ordered steaks and all five steaks were cooked incorrectly, either rarer or more well done than requested. Things happen, I get that, but literally all five were wrong.

I ordered a seared Ahi Tuna appetizer for my main course because I ate lunch a little later than intended and wasn't all that hungry. Mine was good and most of the others said their food was good, just not cooked to order. Also, they are a little pricey considering what it is, especially compared to other local restaurants.

I would go back if other people wanted to go and I may try it again at another time.

Other trips this week:

East End Grill, Bartlett, TN - club sandwich and fries

Torchy's Taco, Memphis, TN - Jalapeno sausage taco and a chicken burrito

Opa Greek Cafe, Oxford, MS

Opa

MAP

Opa is a Greek cafe in Oxford on South Lamar Boulevard just north of University Avenue in the downtown area. I was in Oxford last week for a doctor's appointment. I was going to go to Moe's Barbecue but they weren't open and I wound up here, and do not regret it!

The food was good and the prices were reasonable. I ordered a beef and lamb Gyro sandwich and Feta fritters. My total was about $30 with tax and tip. I highly recommend it and I will be back!

Deli Mexicano, Olive Branch, MS

 Chukis Deli Mexicano

MAP

Deli Mexicano is a relatively new Mexican restaurant in Olive Branch on Goodman Road in the same strip mall and directly next to the Kroger.

I went there a couple of weeks ago with a friend for the first time and it was great! I got a chicken chimichanga and it was one of the best I've had. My friend ordered a couple of tacos and he said they were great also.

My total was about $23 including one Corona and tax. I highly recommend it and I will be back!

Other trips around the same time:

Handy Andy BBQ, Oxford, MS - Barbecue and fries

Underground Cafe, Hernando, MS - Cheese plate and Cubano sandwich

Kutie Pies, Southaven, MS

Kutie Pies

MAP

Kutie Pies is a small bakery and cafe on Goodman Road just east of Swinnea Road. I went there a couple of weeks ago for late lunch and overall I was very impressed.

They have a menu but don't have everything on the menu every day. This particular day I ordered a shrimp po' boy and an order or buffalo chicken egg rolls. Everything was really good.

The prices are about average. I spent just under $30 but it wasn't bad for what all I got. Seafood prices have increased everywhere it seems.

I definitely recommend it and I will be back to try some of the other items.

Isabella's Pizza, Bartlett, TN

Isabella's Pizza

MAP

Isabella's is a small pizza cafe in Bartlett on Bartlett Boulevard a little south of Stage Road. I went there a few weeks ago with a buddy of mine. It used to be a Milano's pizza so their pizza is similar to theirs. It was good. I got two slices and a salad. They have daily specials but they are only during lunch time.

My friend got a slice of barbecue pizza then a slice of meat lovers I think.

Prices are about average. My total was about $19 before tax including a drink. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area!

Caveat: I'm a little behind in posting new restaurants. It's been a busy couple of weeks! Happy New Year!
