Fat Larry's, Bartlett, TN

Fat Larry's

Fat Larry's is a small barbecue restaurant on Highway 70/79/Summer Avenue in Bartlett, a few blocks east of Highway 64. I've been there before but didn't get barbecue. I had a coupon for buy one get one free barbecue plate so that's what I got this time.

It was really good and the service was really good, and really fast considering it was Saturday night and they were fairly busy.  The bill for two barbecue plates, two drinks, and a sausage and cheese appetizer was only about $16.00 including tax. Without the coupon, it would have been a few dollars more, so their prices are pretty reasonable.

Since this is the mid-south, there are plenty of good barbecue places, so I don't say it lightly when I say their food was good. There are places I like a little better, but I enjoyed the dinner last night.

Lboe, Memphis, TN

Lboe (pronounced "elbow") is a restaurant on Overton Square in Memphis, on Madison at the corner of Morrison (a little west of Cooper). I went there this past Thursday for lunch. I had been wanting to go there anyway and this week is the Memphis Flyer "burger week" and Lboe had a special for that.

The special was a Mac&Cheese burger, and it was great! I also split a sausage and cheese plate with a friend and it was really good also. The burger was $5.99 before tax for the burger week special, but normally I think it's around $9.00. I don't remember exactly how much the bill was, but it was average for a bar and grill.

I will definitely be back.

Mike's Family Restaurant, Olive Branch, MS

Mike's is a family style diner in Olive Branch, not far north of Highway 78, just off Cockrum Road (Highway 305) behind the Pizza Hut.  I had been there once before when it was Sweet Pea's but as far as I know, Mike's is a completely new business unrelated to Sweet Pea's.

For some reason, they have very mediocre reviews with a lot complaints but I had a coupon and a friend of mine and I decided to try it today. We debated a little because of the bad reviews, but I was very pleased with the service and food. I got the daily special which was country fried steak and three side items, and I chose macaroni and cheese, black eyed peas, and mashed potatoes, and it was all very good. The serving sizes were fair too. I wasn't able to eat all of the food because it was plenty to fill me up. Before tip, not including the coupon, my total was around $13.00.

The restaurant hasn't been there long, maybe a year or two, so it's possible the bad reviews were from when they first opened, but regardless, as I said, what I got was very good. My friend got the daily special also, but got different sides and said his was very good too.

While I was there, a lady at the table behind us was very rude to the waitress, telling her that she needed to leave customers alone while they were eating and not to bother them by asking if they needed anything because it was "very, very annoying." Seriously what does she expect? The waitress to bring the food then never speak again? I didn't see the girl do anything that should have annoyed the old lady. Maybe it's crap like that causing a few bad reviews. I did notice that my friend and I were the youngest people in there by a number of years and maybe they've just been unlucky getting cranky old people.

I hope the bad reviews were just a fluke and I hope they do well. I will definitely be back.

Boomers, Horn Lake, MS

Boomer's is a small burger joint in Horn Lake, on Nail Road just west of Highway 51. I've been there a couple of times and went again today for lunch. I got a cheeseburger, fries, and drink and it was really good.

They are a small drive-in type place, limited seating inside but great service and great food! Prices are about average. My meal today including tax was around $10.00 if I remember correctly.

I definitely recommend it.

Lafayette's Music Room, Memphis, TN

Lafayette's Music Room

Lafayette's is a bar and grill located on Madison Avenue in Overton Square, basically at the corner of Madison and Cooper. They have a stage and most nights have live music. I went there yesterday, 7/5 to hear a friend of mine play. He has a full big band and they played from 6 PM until about 9 PM.

I got a bacon cheeseburger and it was really good, but a little overpriced in my opinion. No complaints about the food. It wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it was really good. The burger and fries, a soda, and tax was almost $18.00 before tip. They apparently charge for onion and any extras, so the price of the plain burger went from around $9.00 suddenly up to about $14.00, plus there was a $5.00 cover charge to get in. I was expecting the cover charge, but wasn't expecting to be charged for onion. Based on what several other people have said, the prices may be about average for Overton Square. Either way, as I said, the food was good.

I will definitely be back if there is a band I want to hear but personally would not go there just to eat.

The Skybox Grill, Collierville, TN

The Skybox

The Skybox is a sports themed bar and grill in Collierville on Poplar Avenue just west of Houston Levee Road on the north side. I went there this past Wednesday night with a friend that I hadn't seen in several months.

I had been wanting to try this place for a few months but every time I tried to get out there, it was after they were closed. Someone told me they had a really good Monte Cristo sandwich, so that's what I wanted to try, but alas, they don't have that on the menu (that's not a critique of the restaurant. my friend was just wrong). I decided to try the club sandwich and it was really good. I chose a salad as my side item and it was really good also. The service was also very good as well. I'm not really sure how much it was because my friend got the check (thanks Bryant!) but it seemed like prices were average for a bar and grill.

My friend got a brisket sandwich which was the daily special and he said it was really good also. I'll definitely be back.

Marciano's Memphis, TN

Marciano's is an Italian and Mediterranean restaurant on East Brookhaven Drive in Memphis, just off of Poplar, west of White Station Road. I don't recall where I heard about it, but I decided to try it last night and I was impressed.

I ordered the lasagna special and a Cioppino stew appetizer both of which were very good. They brought out bread with what I assume was an olive oil based sauce to dip it in, and it was also very good.

The prices are not cheap, but are in line with other slightly higher end restaurants. My dinner was just over $30.00 for the appetizer which was $8.00, entree which was $18.00, and a drink which was only $2.00 oddly enough, before tip.

I was dressed pretty casually, and to be honest after eating there, I wish I had been a little more formally dressed. Nobody was in shirts and ties, but I was in a print t-shirt and I felt a little too casual. Overall though, the experience was fine. Next time I'll wear a nicer shirt.

Tom's Barbecue, Horn Lake, MS

Tom's is a small Barbecue restaurant in Horn Lake on the west side of Highway 51, just a little south Bullfrog Corner (the intersection Goodman and Highway 51).

I went there this past Thursday night after a rehearsal. The Thursday night special was a cheeseburger, so I decided to try that, and I opted for macaroni and cheese as the side item. The burger was good and the mac and cheese was really good. I actually asked if it had pimento in it or some other ingredient and they said no, just the noodles and cheese sauce. I thought the cheese sauce was exceptionally good.

After I was finished, a waitress came over to my table and brought me a free order of ribs, stating that they had forgotten something on my burger. and the order of ribs was to make up for that error. She didn't say what the error was and I didn't notice anything wrong. Either way, the ribs were fantastic. I don't order ribs very often, but I want them, this is the place I will go.

Apparently, this Tom's is related to the Tom's in Memphis at Getwell at Raines. I went there once several years ago and to be honest, I wasn't impressed, but this time at the location in Horn Lake, I was definitely impressed by the ribs, so I'll have to try the barbecue next time.

The total was a little under $9.00 with a drink and tax, so it was a pretty good deal. I don't know how much the ribs were since they didn't charge for them.

La Guadalupana, Memphis, TN

La Guadalupana

Guadalupana is a Mexican Restaurant in Memphis on Summer just west of Mendenhall, near the Pancake Shop. I've been  there a couple of times and it's been good every time. I went there again last night after a rehearsal in the area. I got the Alambres, which is chicken, steak, or pork with onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, and cheese sauce and it was fantastic. It also comes with your choice of flour or corn tortillas, but I normally don't use those.

It was a huge plate of food and was plenty enough for more than one meal. Their prices are very reasonable considering the amount of food. All together, including a large cheese dip and drink, the total was about $16.00, but would have been considerably less if I had ordered a small cheese dip.

I also should mention that I really like the taste of their salsa that comes with the chips. I eat the salsa at most places, but theirs has a really good taste, and it's just spicy enough to make it good.

They also have a location on Winchester which I have not been to yet. I just found out about that tonight and will be visiting them there since it's closer to my house.

Desoto Family Theater, Southaven, MS

Desoto Family Theater

DFT is a small community theater in Southaven next to the Landers Center (same parking lot). I have been involved with many musicals there but not recently. Last night I went to see Godspell because I knew several people that were in it.

I have always enjoyed the things I've done there, and they have always seemed to have good variety of shows that they put up. I honestly don't how the prices compare. Every show that I have attended has been either because I played trumpet in it, or because I knew someone performing and I have never had to buy a ticket (one of the perks of being involved in community theater).

They put up very well done shows and have lots of talent. If you're into theater, this is a good place to go see shows.

El Patron, Southaven, MS

El Patron

El Patron is a Mexican restaurant on Stateline Road in Southaven just west of I-55 next to the Wendy's. I've been there many times over the years. I was first introduced to it years ago after a shooting match at a range that used to be right down the street.

I was just looking at their Facebook page and there are several bad reviews but I have never had a bad meal there. It isn't my favorite Mexican place, but the food has always been good.

Their prices are about average. I went there last night after a play and got a chicken quesadilla, large cheese dip, and a drink and all together it was about $16.00. The large cheese dip was pretty big, so if I had known that, I would have gotten the small, but that's not a complaint, just an observation.

Backermann's Country Market, Whiteville, TN

Backermann's is a Mennonite market on Highway 64 in Whiteville, TN just before you get to the city. I had heard of it before but had never been there. I went out there this past week for lunch. All I got was a ham sandwich and potato salad, but it was great. I also got a scoop of chocolate ice cream which was really good too.

Prices vary but seemed pretty reasonable for you get. They aren't "cheap" but everything is very high quality. I also bought a few items in the grocery store before heading home, including some lunch meat, cheese, candy, and peach preserves.

Definitely check it out if you're in the area.

Akita Sushi and Hibachi Steakhouse, Southaven, MS

Akita is a Japanese steakhouse in Southaven in the old mall near the McDonald's, next to Robert Irwin Jewelers. I've been there several times and the food has always been really good. On 6/10, we ordered dinner from there and had it delivered to work. I got chicken teriyaki and a tuna sushi roll and it was very good as always.

Prices are about average for a semi-upscale restaurant. My total for everything was around $19.00. One minor issue is they charge for any kind of sauce other than soy sauce, but otherwise, I've always been happy with the food.

El Charro Mexican Restaurant, Horn Lake, MS

El Charro

El Charro is a Mexican restaurant in Horn Lake just west of Bullfrog Corner (Highway 51 and Highway 302). I've been there many times over the years. I first discovered it many years ago on the way to Tunica while riding with someone else. We were hungry and stopped there randomly and I've been going there ever since, even though at the time I first found it, I barely knew where I was. I had never been to Horn Lake before then.

Now that I live near it, I go there pretty regularly, I just haven't been real recently.

Prices are about average for an independent restaurant. Lunch today was about $13.00, including a small queso, drink, and tax.

Yesterday I got the lunch combo with a quesadilla, chicken enchilada, and refried beans and it was very good as always. There are always friendly and service is almost always pretty fast, even when they are busy. Several friends of mine go there regularly also.

Mugshots, Hattiesburg, MS

No map, since they have multiple locations, but there is a map on their website.

Mugshots is a chain with locations in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. I went to the location is Hattiesburg which is the original according to the website about a week and a half ago on Sunday 5/13. I was in town for a company conference and we went there after we got checked in to the hotel. It was very convenient because it was basically in the hotel parking lot.

It was good, but not great. I got a country fried steak and it was cooked differently than I had ever had one (not in a bad way, just different), and I got a side salad and mashed potatoes. Prices were about average for a bar and grill. I believe the total was around $20 or $21 with drink and tip.

It's definitely worth trying if you're in the area. I forget what my coworker got, but she said it was good.

As a side note, we stayed at the Courtyard Marriott near USM, and it was a nice facility. They have an onsite restaurant, but the prices are really high. An order french fries with three different types of dipping sauce was $7.00, and there were only a few fries, but, they were good.

They also don't serve complimentary breakfast like most other hotels do, but it was a nice room and clean.

Kirby Pines Retirement Community, Memphis, TN

Kirby Pines

Ok, so this is an odd one. I had a gig at this location this past Saturday night 5/19. Normally I wouldn't review a place like this because they aren't open to the general public, but they served us dinner, so I'm going to. I don't know much about it as far as a living facility, but the lobby area and dining room are fantastic. I've played a couple of other gigs there too, but nothing recently.

This past Saturday, they had dinner set up as a buffet. I don't know if that's how they normal setup, but it was great. I got a baked chicken breast, a hamburger steak, a baked potato, and some mixed vegetables. There were also other choices, hot dogs, hamburgers, and one or two other options, and several types of deserts, including ice cream.

I have no idea how expensive it is since, as I said, it's not open to the general public. I assume meals are included in the monthly rent or something or residents can buy a meal package. Anyway, if you're ever over there while they are serving dinner and can join in, definitely do it!

One and Only BBQ, Memphis, TN

One and Only

One and Only is a local chain. I have only been to the location on Perkins, which is just South of Poplar right by the railroad tracks. Many years ago it was in IHoP and for a few years after that, it was a Johnny Rockets burger place.

I went there on 5/24 to meet a friend for a lunch appointment and it was great. I had been there once before a few years ago to and remember it being really good.

Yesterday I got a BBQ plate with potato salad (at my friend's suggestion) and beans, and before I arrived, he had already ordered Brunswick Stew and some chicken drummies as an appetizer, and those where great also.

My friend actually paid, which I feel guilty about because I was there mainly to pay him some money I owed him, so I don't know exactly how much the bill was, but as I remember, it's about average for a BBQ place. I definitely recommend it.

Santa Rosa, Southaven, MS

Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa is a Mexican restaurant on Church Road in Southaven, a block or so east of the Tanger Mall, behind the Autozone. I went there today for lunch because I was next door on business anyway.

I don't know how long it's been a Mexican restaurant. It used to be a burger place but I had not been there since sometime around a year ago, but as soon as I walked in, I recognized the interior.

I got the lunch chicken quesadilla special and it was very good and reasonably priced. The total bill including a cheese dip, drink, and tax was $13.00, and the service was very good. They weren't busy at all which was surprising considering it was lunch time.

Sling Shot Charlie's, Arlington, TN

Sling Shot Charlie's

Sling Shot Charlie's is a home-town restaurant on US-70 in Arlington, just east of Main Street. I went there back in November for lunch with some friends that I hadn't seen in a while. I got a cheeseburger and to be honest, it was mediocre, not bad, just nothing special, however, that said, it wasn't bad, and everything the other folks got looked great. I've been trying to get back out there to trying something else, I just haven't made it yet.

Prices were reasonable. It seems like the burger was $5.99 or something like that before tax.

Local's (on the Square), Memphis, TN

Locals is a pub on Overton Square, at the corner of Madison and Cooper. It's in the building where Yosemite Sam's used to be.

I went there for the first time a couple of years ago, and was there again back in November. I met a friend there the first time on her suggestion, and have been back several times since.

Their food is really good and the kitchen is open fairly late.  This last time, I got the cheese and sausage plate, and it was very good and priced about average for a bar and grill.

Other times, I've gotten the duck sandwich, which has been really good.

It is definitely a bar, so if you go in during the evening, it tends to be loud, but that's normal.

Picosos Mexican Restaurant, Memphis, TN

Los Picosos

Picosos is a small, very authentic (as in, most of the staff don't speak English) Mexican restaurant in Memphis on Summer Avenue, just west of Graham, across from Grahamwood Elementary. I went there for the first time back in November on suggestion of a friend and it was fantastic.

I don't remember exactly how much it was, but it was reasonably priced. I ordered the Alambres with chorizo, with onion and peppers and came with tortilla shells, but I normally don't use the tortillas.

Of all the Mexican places I go to, this one is at the top of the list. It's definitely worth trying.

Bozo's BBQ, Mason, TN

Bozo's is a privately owned barbecue restaurant in on US-70 in Mason, TN, a few miles east of Memphis, before you get to Brownsville.  I've been there many times in my life, and went again a few months ago in October.

They have been around since long before I was born. We used to go there when I was very young, and it had been there a long time then. I don't think the original family owns it now, but the food is still great.

This is the one of the few barbecue places where I actually get barbecue. It comes with no sauce on it and you choose between three sauces that are at the table, mild, medium, and hot. I like the hot but all three are good.

I can't remember how much it was, but they are priced about average. They are also known for their pies, which they make fresh daily. Definitely give it a try if you are out that way.

Noodles Asian Bistro, Germantown, TN

Noodles is a small Asian restaurant in Germantown, on Exeter just north of Poplar Avenue, although they also have another location in Bartlett which is larger. I went there last night before a gig with the other musicians. It was really good and fairly priced.

It turns out that what I wanted to order was coincidentally the Saturday special, so it came with a salad and spring roll that it normally wouldn't have come with and it was cheaper. I happened to get the daily special list in the first picture.

I got the Sesame Chicken and it came with a salad with ginger dressing. I don't remember the exact total but the entree was $8.50 before tax. Everybody said what they got was good. There were about 7 of us and everybody got something different.

4-22-18  The "Junkyard" and Pepperjack Bites

4-15-18 Country Fried Chicken Bowl

Dale's, Southaven, MS

Dale's is a full service restaurant in Southaven on Main Street (Stateline Road West) a block or so west of Millbranch Road. I went there for the first time many years ago before I even knew I where I was, and I've been there many times since.

They are a family owned restaurant and the food has always been great. I had not been there recently but a friend of mine is in the local MOPAR club and they had a meeting there this past Tuesday night and I went over just for kicks. The food was great as always.

That night, I got the country fried steak with a side salad, pinto beans, and macaroni and cheese. Their side salad is one of the best around. At many places, the side salad is just some lettuce with maybe some carrots on it, but at Dale's, it's a regular salad, just a little smaller (I forgot to take a picture of the salad).

They have a daily special and that's what I got. All together before tip, including a drink, it was around $10.00.

Saturday, April 28, 2018

Hazel's Family Restaurant, Olive Branch, MS

Hazel's is a small family diner on Goodman Road in the shopping center at the northwest corner of Craft Road in Olive Branch. I went there today for lunch after running some errands.

Overall, the experience was ok, but I was a little put off by the fact that they after bringing my food out, nobody ever checked back to see if I needed anything. I am NOT the kind of person that needs to have my butt kissed at all, but after taking my order, someone brought my food out and set the food and the check on the table and after that, no one else spoke to me again, even to ask if everything was ok. The few interactions I had with them were pleasant though.

That said, however, the food was good. I got a club sandwich and onion rings. The onion rings were very slightly chewy, but they tasted good and the sandwich tasted good and had plenty of meat on it. It had plenty of mayo on it too. That's not a criticism at all, it's just worth mentioning because not everyone likes that much mayo, but I do.

A lady across from me got the daily catfish special and it looked pretty good. All that said, I would definitely go back if I'm near it.

Prices seem to be reasonable. My sandwich with onion rings, a drink, and tax was $10.01 before tip, which I thought was very reasonable for what I got. I did leave a tip, just not as much of one as I would have normally left. I'm not the kind of person that leaves no tip unless the service is just horrible, which it wasn't.

They seem to cater to an older crowd, at least that's how it seemed today. I was the only person in there under about 70, but that's not any kind kind of problem, just an observation.

Huey's Collierville, TN

Huey's is a local chain with several locations and I went to the one in Collierville tonight on Poplar Avenue at Houston Levee. I have an unpopular opinion about Huey's. Many people rave about how great their burgers are but in my opinion, I have had much better burgers at other places.

That said, I don't dislike Huey's. Their burgers are average or slightly above average, with a lot of options for add-ons. I went there tonight because somewhere else I was going was closed. Instead of a burger, I got a sausage and cheese plate which was pretty good. The honey mustard dressing that came with it was really good and the barbecue sauce was pretty good too.

The total with drink and tip was about $15.00. I definitely don't mind eating there, it just isn't my first choice when it comes to hamburgers.

TGI Friday's, Southaven, MS

Friday's is a chain restaurant with locations in many cities. They used to be really exceptional, but in the last few years, they seem to have regressed to average, just like many other chains. Still, their food is good and I still go there from time to time.

I went there this past Sunday night to the Southaven location on Goodman Road because I went to eat kind of late and not much else was open. They have an endless appetizer special that is now standard on the menu and for what you get, it's a good deal. You can choose endless refills from most the available appetizers.

I got the mozzarella sticks, boneless buffalo wings. and boneless garlic Parmesan wings. Their wings are average, but average is not bad at all, and as I stated, it's unlimited refills until 10:00 PM, and the mozzarella sticks are pretty good.

Prices are also average. I spent a total of about $20.00 including a drink, and tax and tip. It isn't one of my first choices any more (they used to be) but I will definitely still go there.

The Shake Shack, Marion, AR

The Shake Shack

The Shake Shack is a diner on East Military Road just off I-55 in Marion, AR. I found it randomly during a Google search and decided to try it. I went there this morning early but found out they serve the entire menu any time so I ordered a burger.

I got the Pizza Burger, and to be honest, it wasn't what I expected, but it was very good. It's mozzarella cheese fried and served like a burger. I would definitely get it again. The prices were really good. The burger, fries, and a drink was less than $9.00 including tax.

The owner was clearly and Elvis fan. The restaurant was decorated with Elvis memorabilia!

I plan on going back soon and trying some of the other items. The regular burgers looked great.

Hickory Tavern, Collierville, TN

Hickorty Tavern

Hickory Tavern is a chain, but one that I was unaware of until yesterday. A friend of mine is a singer and he posted that he was going to be singing at this location tonight, so I decided to try it out. The food was great, and so was the entertainment. My friend set up in a corner and the volume level was perfect, not to loud, but loud enough to hear.

The restaurant is in Collierville on Merchants Park Circle in the Shops of Carriage Crossing, behind Dillard's.

I ordered something called the Smothered Chicken and it was great. It was a grilled chicken breast smothered in onions, mushroom, and cheese, and came with a side item (I ordered a loaded baked potato) and also a small salad with what I believe was raspberry vinaigrette dressing.  Prices were about average for a bar and grill. The entree and drink was about $17.00 before tip.

My friend said he sings there most Tuesday nights if you want to check it out. Jamie Baker Music
