The Half Shell, Memphis, TN

The Half Shell

MAP

The Half Shell is a Memphis seafood restaurant with two locations. I've posted about the original location a couple of times but had never been to the location on Winchester which is on Winchester about a block or so west of Hack's Cross Road.

I went there last night because they are open sort of late. The food was good and the atmosphere wasn't bad but I didn't particularly care for their choice of music plus it was pretty loud most of the time.

I ordered a Monte Cristo sandwich (which is another specific reason I go there) and some shrimp spring rolls all of which was really good. My total was about $36 with a Diet Coke and a tip which they add a tip automatically but the waitress said they only get a small part of the tip so I left a few extra dollars on top of the $36 total.

The food was good but I was a little annoyed by the loud music, but to be honest it seemed to fit the clientele. I will definitely go back but I'll probably go to the Mendenhall location more frequently.

I definitely recommend their food and the service was really good.

Also, they are a posted property if that is of any interest to you. Here is a link to other posted properties in the area if that is of interest to you.

Other trips this week

East End, Bartlett, TN - Club sandwich and sausage and cheese plate. They are also posted but I didn't get picture.

The Slugburger Cafe, Corinth, MS

Slugburger Cafe

MAP

The Slugburger Cafe is a small cafe in Corinth on Highway 72 just west of US-45. There are at least two slug burger cafes in Corinth, this one and the White Trolley. I believe this one claims to be the original. They also have beef burgers and other foods including breakfast and they open early at 6:00 AM.

Slug burgers are similar to hamburgers but there is no meat. The patty is made of soy or dough (depending on the recipe) and fried. I was in Corinth this past Wednesday and stopped by.

The burger was really good and better than the last time I had one at the White Trolley. The prices are pretty cheap. The slug burgers are only only $1.50 each and my total for two burgers and a canned drink was less than $6.00.

I will definitely be back when I'm in the area.

Other recent trips

Abe's Corinth - Burger and fries

Note: The people at Abe's have always been friendly but this time they were not. The owner never spoke, although to be fair he was cooking and didn't really have time but the lady, I think his wife, was not particularly friendly and acted annoyed when I asked for more than two packs of ketchup with my fries. Maybe they were just having a bad day. The food was good as usual though.

Another note, apparently they are serving mostly to go orders now. The door was locked and you order and receive your order the window. No complaints. It's just something to be aware of.

Renee's Downtown Memphis (They don't seem to have a web site) - Tuna Sandwich and fries

Wilson Cafe, Wilson, AR

Wilson Cafe

MAP

Wilson is one of those places I give its own entry to every time I go. I can't say enough about them. The food and service are always fantastic. I went there this past Saturday with a friend.

I ordered the apple brandy pork chop and chicken and goat cheese deviled eggs. My friend ordered meat loaf and friend green tomatoes.

I don't remember exactly how much it was. We forgot to ask for separate checks and I wound up paying for both appetizers and my friend left the tip. I think my part was around $60 but it got a little convoluted and I don't really remember.

Regardless, for what you get the prices are really good, albeit more expensive that O'Charley's or anywhere like that, but fully worth every penny!

Vanelli's Deli, Germantown, TN

Vanelli's

MAP

Vanelli's is just what it sounds like, a deli in Germantown on Farmington Boulevard just east of Exeter Road, or a couple of blocks east of the fire station. I went there this past Monday for lunch and it was great.

They much more than just sandwiches but I wasn't all that hungry so I got a club sandwich. The bread and ingredients were very fresh and the bread was very soft, unlike many chain delis. They are little pricier than say Subway, but the food was so much better.

I got a foot long sub, a drink, chips, and a cookie and it was almost $19 but well worth it. I will definitely go back and highly recommend them. There were several things on the menu that sounded good so I want to try some other items besides sandwiches.

Other trips this last week or so:

Southaven Pizza - Chicken Parmesan

Cinco de Mayo, Olive Branch - Chicken chimichanga

East End Grill, Memphis - Club sandwich, Shrimp, Chip and queso

Wilson Cafe, Wilson, AR

Wilson Cafe

MAP

Wilson is one of those places I always give its own page to every time I go there. A couple of friends and I went there last weekend. I only spent $44 for myself and the food was fantastic.

I ordered blackened salmon and blackened shrimp and goat cheese deviled eggs, one friend ordered fried green tomatoes and an apple brandy pork chop, and my other friend ordered jambalaya and spicy cauliflower.

Everything was fantastic. One of my friends had never been there before and she was thoroughly impressed, just as I knew she would be.

The service was perfect as always!

Other trips:

This past week I also went to Cafe Eclectic. I got a chicken quesadilla and it was good but they no longer have the diablo chicken wrap that I go there for. Their food it good but unfortunately I won't be back much simply because I go there specifically for the wrap. I did also try a vegan peanut butter cookie and it was pretty good.

Blue Agave, Hernando, MS

Blue Agave

MAP

Blue Agave is a Mexican restaurant in Hernando on Commerce Street a few blocks west of I-55 right beside Taco Felix. I went there for lunch today while I was in Hernando for a training class.

The food was good and the prices were about average. I got a chimichanga, queso, and a drink and the total was about $16 before tip. The service was also very good and the waitress asked me about my car and we chatted about Corvettes for a couple of minutes!

I will definitely go back when I'm in the area.

Other trip:

On the way home I stopped at The Dip and got a cheeseburger, drink, and chocolate shake. Honestly, it was okay but it wasn't anything special and it was sort of expensive, which a friend mentioned earlier today when I mentioned I might go there.

The total was $20 for that and at other places it would have been a few dollars cheaper. It wasn't extremely expensive, it was just a little overpriced, in my opinion. I would go back but I wouldn't make a special trip.

Dan McGuinness, Southaven, MS

Dan McGuinness

MAP

Dan McGuinness is an Irish pub on Goodman Road at Malone Road in the strip center that's behind the Taco Bell. I've been there many times but had not been recently until last Thursday. A friend was in town and wanted to meet there for dinner.

I ordered fish and chips and to be honest, they were just okay. My friend and his wife ordered an appetizer of Yum Yum chicken and it was really good.

I don't know how much the bill was because my friend paid.

JT's Donuts, Hernando, MS

JTs

MAP

JT's is a small donut shop in Hernando on Mt. Pleasant Road north of Commerce Street, basically behind/beside the Kroger. I went there for breakfast yesterday morning while I was in Hernando for a training class.

I got a chocolate donut, a jalapeƱo kolachi, and a chocolate milk. All were pretty good and very fresh. The prices are about the same as other shops. My total was around $6 I think. Bonus points, the cashier noticed my hat and shirt matched my car!

I would definitely go back if I'm in the area

Junior's, Hernando, MS

Junior's

MAP

Junior's is a home cooking cafe style restaurant in Hernando on Highway 51 just north of Highway 304, or just south of The Dip. I went there this past for lunch and it was great. I had been there before but it's been several years ago.

They always have a choice of three or four meats and vegetables and that day I got spaghetti, Lima beans, and baked beans. The prices are great. The total with a drink and tax was only $11 and it was plenty of food.

I remember the last time I was there about four years ago it was $11 so they have not raised their prices. I highly recommend them.

They are only open limited hours, during the week from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Other recent trips:

Lost Pizza, Southaven - Tamales

KC Steakhouse, Batesville - Blackened Grouper
