Torchy's is a fast food Mexican restaurant on South Mendenhall Road at the corner of Spotswood Avenue just south of Poplar Avenue. It's a chain and I usually don't review chain restaurants but it's the only in the area and it's pretty new.

It's a lot like Moe's or other places like that. You order then they bring it to you. I was there two Sunday's ago and ordered a burrito (which was bigger than it appears in the picture) and some queso. Everything was pretty good and prices were decent. I don't remember exactly how much it was but it was around $22 including a drink and tax.

I will definitely go back when I'm in the area.

Central Barbecue is a local chain with several location in Memphis. I haven't been to any location in several years after horrendously bad customer service from the owner at the Summer Avenue location a few years back. I normally avoid Central but a friend wanted to meet at the one on Poplar a back this past Wednesday for lunch and I didn't want to be the "difficult" friend so I went.

The food was reasonably good and the prices were about the same as any other barbecue place. It's not one of my favorite places to go obviously but it's okay.

I ordered a sausage and cheese plate and a barbecue sandwich. Both were decent any my total was around $21 with a drink and tax.

The customer service was reasonably good also and as I said, the issue I had at the location on Summer a few years back was with the owner who was a complete jerk basically because they had just opened and didn't have a menu board yet and he thought for some reason I should have known everything that was on the menu. It's a long story but I'll just leave it at that.

Poke Bros. is a sushi bowl restaurant in on Poplar Avenue east of Massey Road in the strip mall where Subway is. I had never had this type of sushi but went there Tuesday for lunch.

They have a set menu or you can create your own bowl. I got "The Duke" which had tuna, salmon, shrimp, seaweed, jalapeños, onions, edamame, cucumber, and other vegetables. There was a choice between regular and spicy fish and I got spicy.

Everything was really good and the prices were pretty reasonable. My total was about $17 for a pretty large bowl of food.

I will definitely be back to try some of their other bowls.

I've posted about Wilson Cafe numerous times so I'll keep it brief. I went there two different times this past week, last Saturday then again last Monday. As usual, it was excellent. Monday I went early in the day and was able to get lunch for the first time. I ordered baked scallops over corn pasta and chicken Parmesan deviled eggs (which were fantastic) and my friend ordered a steak. My bill was around $60 before tip.

Rockhouse is a bar and grill on the square in Oxford at the corner of Lamar Boulevard and Tyler Avenue across the street from Moe's Original Barbecue. I think it's fairly new to Oxford and I saw it for the first time last week while I was eating at Moe's. I was parked right in front of it and looked at the menu before I left to come home that day.

I was in Oxford again yesterday and went there for lunch. It seems to be Cajun inspired cuisine with several types of gator meat items, jambalaya, and other things like that. Yesterday I ordered the queso as an appetizer and the Devilburger which is a cheeseburger with pepper jack cheese, sour cream, guacamole, green chili peppers, and an onion ring.

The queso reminded me of the bean dip that you can buy in the grocery store but it didn't taste like that. It was very thick and just spicy enough to not be too hot for folks that don't like hot spicy food.

Everything was really good and I definitely want to go back. There were numerous things on the menu that sounded great including gator, shrimp, or crawfish tacos, and several other specific things I want to eventually try.

The service was really good and the prices were reasonable for what I got. My total was just under $25 including a drink and tax before tip.

As the name suggests, they sometimes have live music but I was there earlier in the afternoon and didn't have time to stay for the band that was listed last night.

Coleman's is a small barbecue restaurant in Senatobia on Main Street/Highway 4 just a couple of blocks west of I-55. They used to have several locations in the area but they went out of business a couple of years ago, but the location in Senatobia reopened recently (I don't know exactly when).

They used to be known for having good barbecue and burgers and I very often go to barbecue places for burgers since most barbecue places have good burgers. I was there pretty early after a doctor's appointment. They used to serve everything on the menu any time but now they only serve breakfast until whatever their lunch hours are.

The other day I ordered a sausage toaster and a half order of sausage and biscuits. Unfortunately the food wasn't all that great. It was passable but the food didn't have much flavor. The toaster was better than the biscuits and it's worth noting that the toaster had two pieces of sausage and not just one like many other places, and the total was only around $6 including a drink and tax. The prices are very reasonable.

I want to go back and try the barbecue and burgers so I will update once I get a chance to. I hope the other food will be better.

Sunday night I went to the Underground Cafe in Hernando again. The food was good. I ordered a philly cheese steak sandwich with a side salad as the side and a sausage and cheese plate. My friend ordered a Cajun pasta dish. Everything was very good. My total was around $20 including a drink and tax before tip which was very good for what all I got.

 Area 51 is an ice cream shop in Hernando on Commerce Street a few blocks east of Highway 51 and the downtown square. I was eating at La Siesta last week and went there for dessert. They were very good and the prices were pretty reasonable, cheaper than some other places I've been.

I got a scoop of mint chocolate chip and a scoop of cookies-n-cream and a Diet Coke. The ice cream was nice and thick and tasted good. The total for everything was only about $6. The last time I got ice cream a similar order was almost $10 and not as good.

I definitely recommend them for a nice dessert!

La Siesta is a Mexican restaurant in Hernando Highway 304/Commerce Street a few blocks west of I-55. They used to be located in Southaven but moved to Hernando a few years ago. I went there this past Tuesday for dinner after another place I went wasn't open.

I ordered I a chicken dish but I can't remember the name. I looked on the menu and don't see it. It was really good and I definitely recommend it. The total was around $19 with a drink and cheese dip so the prices were about the same as most other Mexican restaurants.

If you like Mexican food you'll like La Siesta.

Wilson is one of those places that I always give its own separate post when I go there. I'll keep it short because I've posted about it many times.

I went there this past Monday while on vacation. I ordered blackened salmon with a Caesar salad and as usual, it was great! My total was around $56 before tip including a dessert, a piece of cheesecake which I didn't get a clear picture of so I'm not posting it, a glass of wine, and tax. For what you get there, the prices are great.

Something new: Instead of posting a "mish mash" page every few months with numerous entries, I'm going to start incorporating them in every few posts.

Underground Cafe is a small cafe on Memphis Street at the corner of West Commerce Street/Highway 304 in the Hernando downtown square. I almost missed it because it's literally underground behind another business, something called Saint and Social which appeared to be a lady's clothing store.

I went there tonight for dinner and it was really good. I ordered a macaroni and cheese barbecue sandwich and a sausage and cheese appetizer. Both were really good but I wasn't as hungry as I thought and I brought most of the sandwich home. I did eat a few bites of it and it was good!

The total including a drink and tax was just under $25 but what all I got that was a good price. I will definitely go back again.

BB's Diner is a small, quaint diner in Water Valley on Martin Street just a few blocks east of Main Street. I was near Water Valley today on business and just looked on Google for restaurants and it was one of the first to come up.

Let me tell you, I made a fantastic choice! The food and service were both excellent! They weren't very busy but several people came in to eat while I was there. I will make it a point to go back there.

I ordered the catfish plate with green beans and mashed potatoes and everything was great. The prices were good too. All together my total was about $14 and that included an extra drink. It came with one canned drink but I got a second one because I always drink a lot while I eat.

I can't recommend this place enough! It's not all that far from Oxford or Batesville and worth every minute of the drive!

On a side note, I found out when I got home an acquaintance of mine that plays trumpet was playing at a venue there tonight and I missed him by just a couple of hours. If I had known I would have found a way to kill a couple of hours and gone to hear him play.
