Oby's, Oxford, MS

Oby's

MAP

Oby's is a sandwich shop in Oxford on University Avenue just west of Mississippi Highway 7. I went there today after a doctor's appointment on recommendation of the nurse. It's similar to McAlister's but it's not a national chain. They have two locations, one in Oxford and one in Starkville.

I ordered a club sandwich with potato salad and it was very good. It came out pretty quickly and the service was excellent.

They are reasonably priced. With a drink and tax the total was around $11. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area.

Marshall's Steakhouse, Holly Springs, MS

Marshall's Steakhouse

MAP

Marshall's is a casual steakhouse in Holly Springs on Mississippi Highway 178 just before you get to the actual city of Holly Springs. You can see it from Highway 78 but you have to exit and get over to MS-178 to get to the entrance.

I went there tonight for dinner and was really impressed. I ordered a sausage and cheese plate and a seven ounce filet. Everything was really good and I will definitely be back. In light of my previous post about Magnolia Steakhouse, I'll say that Marshall's wasn't quite as good as them but they were really good. I will definitely be back.

My total before tip was right at $65. It was a little more expensive than Magnolia but I ordered a slightly more expensive appetizer, but the steak was seven ounces instead of ten.

Anyway as I said, it was really good. I definitely recommend them and I will be back.

Magnolia Smokehouse is a casual steak house in Grenada on Lakeview Drive/Highway 8 about four miles east of Interstate 55. I went there last night just to try it out.

Let me tell you, it was fantastic. It may have been the best steak I've ever had, but it was certainly one of the top few along with Wilson Cafe in Wilson, AR and Skinny J's in Jonesboro, AR. They aren't cheap but it's great food. I ordered a stuffed jalapeƱo appetizer, a side salad, a ten ounce filet with a baked potato. My friend ordered the filet also but got a sausage and cheese appetizer.

Everything was really good. The total for everything including a drink before tip was right at $54 but I've paid much more for a steak that wasn't quite as good. The filet was so tender I almost didn't need a knife to cut it and the flavor was incredible.

It's a little bit of a drive from my house, a little over an hour, but it's definitely worth it. I will be back!

Catfish Country, Hernando, MS

Catfish Country

MAP

Catfish County is exactly what it sounds like, a catfish/seafood restaurant in Hernando on Holly Springs Road a few blocks east of Getwell Road. I went there this past Friday. I usually won't go to a restaurant on a busy night but I went sort of late and didn't think they would be that busy. They were pretty busy but I was seated within 10 or 15 minutes.

I ordered a fish and shrimp combo with macaroni and cheese and a baked potato. It was pretty good, definitely worth trying. It seemed to be a little expensive BUT I don't get seafood that much. It's probably reasonable for what I got. The total was around $25 before tip, a drink and tax.

The service was pretty good. I asked for a loaded potato and they forgot to put cheese and bacon on it but of course they took the charge off so it was not big deal at all.

I will definitely go back again.

Sam's Deli, Memphis, TN

Sam's Deli

MAP

Sam's Deli is exactly what it sounds like, a deli on Highland Street in Memphis, a little south of Southern Avenue on the west side. Interestingly enough, it's directly across the street from where they used to be. They don't have a sign up and it looks like a house so you have to be on the lookout for it.

I went there Thursday night for dinner and was very impressed. I had been there a few years ago when they were on Summer Avenue. The girl working said they had been back at that location where they are now for about a year but were closed most of the year due to the COVID pandemic. They are currently offering take out only but they have one table outside on the patio.

There were several things on the menu that sounded good. I ordered the Cubana which is basically a barbecue sub but it had pickles and mustard. I wasn't sure how mustard was going to fit with barbecue but it was really good. I also ordered a side of mozzarella sticks but if I had known how big the sandwich was going to be I wouldn't have ordered them. You can't really tell by the picture but the sandwich was huge!

Everything was really good and the price for what I got wasn't bad. My total was around $21 including a drink and tax.

My friend ordered a Korean chicken bowl of some sort and he said it was really good also.

I recommend them and I will be back soon to try some of the other things on the menu.

Ajax Diner, Oxford, MS

MAP

Ajax is a small diner in the heart of downtown Oxford on the square, in the northwest corner. I was there this past Monday after a doctor's appointment in Oxford. I had been there once before about four years ago.

It was very good. I ordered chicken and dumplings with a side of macaroni and cheese and black-eyed peas and it came out pretty quickly. Everything was very good and the prices are pretty reasonable. My total with a drink and tax before tip was only about $13 and it was plenty of food.

It's on the downtown square as I said so parking is limited. If you go during a busy time it may take you a while to find a parking place.

I definitely recommend giving them a try if you're in the area.
