New Day Overhead Doors, Southaven, MS

New Day Overhead Doors

So here's another rare "not a restaurant" post.

I found out about New Day from a friend whose brother owns it and he recommended it to me. I've been having issues with my garage door for about a year and someone came out from another company last year and as he stepped out of his truck before even looking at the door he told me I needed new door sensors for around $300. It's amazing how he could know before even looking at it! I told him I would have to let him know.

A few days ago when I contacted John at New Day he came right over (I got lucky, he was just starting his day and was nearby) and inspected the door and told me that the wiring was just loose. He replaced the wires and put on wire protectors for a service fee of $65.00 and it fixed the problem. Turns out the wiring was the only problem and I didn't need new sensors.

I'm really impressed and will use New Day again next time I need my garage door serviced.

Maria's Cantina, Southaven, MS

Maria's Cantina

MAP

Maria's is a Mexican restaurant in Southaven on Airways a couple of blocks south of Goodman Road on the west side. I thought I had posted about them previously but apparently I haven't. I went there this past Saturday with a friend for lunch.

They have really good Mexican food but they have some of the best burgers in town. This time I got a jalapeno burger which I've had before. It was great and my friend said he was too. He ordered a regular burger with no special toppings.

I don't remember how much it was. We also ordered some cheese dip and I think my total was around $15 or $16. I definitely recommend it if you're in the area.

El Nopal, Cordova, TN

El Nopal, Cordova

MAP

El Nopal is a Mexican restaurant in Cordova on Houston Levee Road just south of Highway 64 near the T.J. Mulligan's. I've been there before but not recently. I went to visit a friend that lives near there a few days ago and stopped to have lunch.

They have pretty standard Mexican fare and the do a good job. The food has always been good and the prices reasonable. I got a chicken Chimichanga and the total including a small queso was somewhere around $12 or $13 before tip. It's definitely somewhere I recommend if you're near there.

Venizia's Garden, Southaven, MS

Venizia's Garden

MAP

Venizia's is a new Italian Restaurant in Southaven on Main Street just east of Millbranch on the north side. I haven't had a chance to eat inside there yet but last week we ordered take out at work. I got Chicken Parmesan and it was good. It wasn't great but it was good and it was reasonably inexpensive. I don't remember how much my total was but I think the entree was $10 or so.

My coworker got another chicken dish and she said it was okay. I hope to get a chance to go there and eat inside soon. I think the food will be better fresher. Often at work we order food and then by the time we get it eat it it's not longer hot. In particular the garlic knots that it came with would have been better hot but by the time I ate those they were cold. This was not the fault of the restaurant, and I should mention that the portions were large.

I will make a new post once I get a chance and maybe I will be able to give them a better review. Don't let this dissuade you from going though. Like I said, what I got was good.

Mis Pueblo, Southaven, MS

Mi Pueblo

MAP

Mi Pueblo (not to be confused with Mis Pueblo, a different company) is a Mexican restaurant in Southaven, MS at the corner of Goodman Road and Elmore Road in the shopping center on the southeast side.

I can't believe I've never blogged about this place before because I've been there a number of times over the years.

Most Mexican restaurants about about the same with a few notable exceptions. Mi Pueblo is one of the better choices. Their food always seems fresh and I like everything I've had there. Their queso is also particularly good and they give you plenty of it. A large is enough for 5 or 6 people, maybe more.

I met a friend there last week for lunch and ordered a chicken quesadilla which is what I typically get at a Mexican restaurant. It was very good as always and not expensive. I ordered off the lunch menu and I believe my total was around $10 including a drink and tax.

It's one of my favorite choices and it's conveniently close to my house.

Burgers and Stuff, Walnut, MS

Burger's and Stuff

MAP

Burger's and Stuff is a small restaurants in Walnut, MS on Highway 72 in a group of different businesses that are basically at the corner of Highway 72 and Highway 15 on the southeast side. I saw it yesterday in the way to Corinth and remembered that I had eaten there once many years ago and wanted to try it again.

On the way back from Corinth I stopped and had late lunch. I got a burger and fries and it was pretty good. It wasn't great, but it was good and the place seems to be really popular. They also had a cafeteria style lunch counter and that's what most everybody else ordered and everything I saw looked pretty good.

The prices were pretty reasonable. For a double burger, fries, and a drink the total was around $8 or $9 if I remember correctly.

Everybody was really friendly and when I'm back up that way I'm going to try it again and get something from the cafe counter.

Borroum's Drug Store, Corinth, MS

Borroum's Drug Store

MAP

Borroum's is a small town drug store with a lunch counter. It's in the downtown square of Corinth at the corner of Waldron Street and Franklin Street. I went there last year on recommendation but I got there pretty early and they weren't serving food yet. I got a milkshake which was great but have been trying to get back for a while now and just got back there yesterday morning.

I got a tuna melt which comes with chips, and canned drinks. The tuna sandwich was one of the best I've ever had actually and it was not expensive. I got two canned drinks and altogether the total was only about $8.00 with tax.

They were not open for inside dining yet due to city regulations so I sat outside and enjoyed the nice weather. I plan on going back and trying something else when I'm back up that way.

I will mention that parking is a little bit of an issue. It's in a small downtown square that was probably built in the late 1800s when the city was founded and the lanes for parking and driving are pretty narrow. I got lucky and parked right by it but it was the only parking space anywhere close by. It was sheer luck on my part. Last year when I went there I had to park around the corner. It's not a problem, it's just something worth mentioning.
