Good Fortune, Memphis, TN

Good Fortune

MAP

Good Fortune is a Ramen Noodle restaurant in downtown Memphis in the spot where South of Beale used to be (SoB moved just north of the same location). My friends and I found it randomly last weekend because we went to South of Beale to eat not knowing it had moved. There was an hour wait at SoB and we decided to try Good Fortune mainly because I got a parking spot right in front.

The food was really good and the wings my friend ordered were fantastic. It isn't cheap but it isn't too bad considering what all we got.

I got the "Big City" which is noodles with fried chicken, one my of friends got that also, an order of beef dumplings, my other friend got the GFC Wings, and I got an order of shrimp dumplings. All together for two of us, the total including a Diet Coke and an alcoholic drink was $83 including tax.

I highly recommend it and I will definitely be back.

Paulette's, Harbor Town, Downtown Memphis, TN

Paulette's

MAP

Paulette's is an upscale restaurant in downtown Memphis on the island, at Harbor Town Square. It has its own parking which is somewhat unusual for downtown. I went there today for lunch.

In the interest of giving a fair review, what I ordered wasn't as good as I was expecting, however it was a Hungarian dish and I'm completely unfamiliar with Hungarian fare. That said, it was good, I just didn't really know what I was getting. The cinnamon apple portion of it was really good and the chicken wrap was good too, just not what I expected. The deviled egg appetizer was really good too. Also, it's worth mentioning, I rarely eat bread but the bread they brought out was really good. It had a lot of flavor.

The service was fantastic! The waiter was friendly and was very attentive. Ask for Jaylen. He was great.

The prices were much cheaper than I expected for an upscale downtown restaurant. My total was a little over $28 with tax and no drink (I drank water).

All that said, don't misunderstand me. The food was good, it just wasn't what I was expecting. I definitely recommend them and I will definitely be back!

South of Beale East, Memphis, TN

https://southofbeale.com/

MAP

South of Beale is a local restaurant generally specializing in burgers but they have plenty of other things on the menu. I've posted about the downtown location before but they have recently opened a new location in east Memphis. It's on Sanderlin Avenue just east of Mendenhall Road across from the Kroger.

I went there yesterday for lunch and it was just as good as the downtown location. I ordered the S.O.B. burger and three cheese macaroni and cheese. The total was around $20 with a drink and tax which is pretty reasonable for a niche burger restaurant.

The east Memphis location has more parking than the downtown location. I'd highly recommend them!

Alma Jeans Southern Kookin, Senatobia, MS

Alma Jean's

MAP

Alma Jean's is a home cooking cafe style restaurant on Norfleet Street which is just west of I-55 off of Highway 4. I was near Senatobia this morning on personal business and stopped by for lunch. I knew nothing about it but had seen it before.

I got catfish with hush puppies with a side of baked beans and mashed potatoes and everything was really good. My total with a drink and tax was a little under $15 which was a really good price for what all I got. It was three pretty large pieces of fish.

I will definitely be back when I'm in the area and highly recommend trying them.

Mr. Q's SLoppy Joes, Horn Lake, MS

Mr. Q

MAP

Mr. Q's is a small restaurant in on Highway 51 about two blocks south of Nail Road that specializes in sloppy joe sandwiches. I went there this past Thursday morning for breakfast. I'm not normally a big breakfast food guy but they don't serve lunch until 10:30.

I ordered the Big Breakfast which is pancakes, eggs, and your choice of three meats. I chose bacon, sausage, and ham. Everything was really good and the service was great. My total about just under $14 including a drink and tax. For what I got, the prices are excellent.

I planned on going back Friday for lunch but I was out of town and got back later than I expected. I will definitely be back for breakfast and for lunch to try their other items. He told me they have a breakfast buffet on Saturday's so I want to check that out also.

Lucky China, Southaven, MS

Lucky China

MAP

Lucky China is a Chinese restaurant on Main Street about two blocks west of I-55. I had heard really mixed reviews of them and never made it there to try it because of that. Last Friday at work someone recommended them, saying that she went there regularly and like them.

I ordered the General Tso's chicken and it was very good. It was about $11 and there was plenty of food. I don't know why they get negative reviews but I will definitely be back!

KC Steakhouse, Batesville, MS

MAP

Kennel Club Steakhouse is a steak and seafood restaurant in Batesville which is just east of I-55 on House-Carlson Drive which runs south off of Highway 6. I stopped there this past Saturday on the way to Oxford. I had seen it before passing by but didn't know anything about it.

We got lucky and found a parking spot right up front and even though they were fairly busy, we went straight to a table. I ordered the Cajun Parmesan catfish with a side salad and baked potato and a sausage and cheese plate. The fish was great. The sausage and cheese plate was very good also.

I don't remember what my friend ordered for his meal but he got a bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer that he said was really good.

I don't remember how much the meal itself was but my total was $38 for everything including a drink, tax, and tip so the prices aren't bad at all.

A friend of mine and I were actually headed to Oxford to eat but randomly decided to stop there instead and it was a great choice. I will definitely be back.

Dyer's, Collierville, TN

Dyer's

MAP

Dyer's is a burger restaurant on the downtown square in Collierville, right across from the west side of Town Square Park, which is west of Poplar Avenue. I went there this past Wednesday for lunch. If you aren't familiar with them, check out the following link. Dyer's has been around the Memphis area a long time but in various locations. Currently there are two locations I believe, downtown Memphis and Collierville.

While I can't vouch for the authenticity of the information in this following article, I can say I worked there back in the early 90s for two or three months and we did not change the grease while I worked there.

Dyer's 100 year old grease

They have numerous items on their menu now. Back years ago they had only burgers and hot dogs and the only condiments available were ketchup, mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, and cheese. The side options were potato chips, and the drink options were Coke, Diet Coke, and water. They later added a few kinds of beer and then eventually expanded the menu.

I got a burger and fries and they were as good as they always were. I also got a scoop of ice cream for dessert and it was fine also.

My burger and fries were about $14 I think. My total bill including tax and tip was about $23

I definitely like them and recommend it if you like a good old fashioned greasy burger. They aren't as greasy as you might think considering they are deep fried in grease.
